Leather Tool 2: Bevel

It's called the bevel.
The point is called the toe. The bottom end is called the heel

This "leaning forward" on the toe, will give a very deep depression, and little or no fanning out.

Beveling this way will also curl the edge of the cut. (which is really bad)

Which is what you use to hit the end to the stamp.
There are 3 kinds of mallets:
Wood-good.
Poly-better.
Rawhide-best.
Never use a steel hammer.
Ever!!
It will ruin your tools!!
Trust me.
(yes I've used a steel hammer.)
Rawhide is what's usually standard.
It's just really pricey.
(You can buy a rawhide mallet at Tandy's petty cheaply, if your a member. I'm now a member, but I wasn't when I bought my mallet. Reason why I have a poly mallet.)

Very interesting! What exactly is different from cutting and beveling? How does beveling make the flower look so cool?
Cutting is...well cutting. The swivel knife is a really sharp blade that slices through the leather. The bevel just takes that cut and pushes the leather down leaving a kind of ridge.
Meaning...if I cut a line I can bevel that line on the left or the right. So what I did was make the flower stand out from the leather. I could have made the flower sink down from the leather. By beveling the inside of the flower. I hope that helped.
very nice lesson in beveling and leather working...
like the flower by the way...
also nice way to label you pictures so no one can copy them...
are you feeling better?
Mimi
Oh, ok. I noticed when you beveled, the leather seemed more antiqued or something. That's really cool. Thanks for the rundown.
Mimi~
